  • JUNO'S! ... & How we got the R JUNO'S! ... & How we got the Russell Peters interview

    • From: raakhi
    • Description:

SO about a month ago we received a call that South Asian Arts was invited to perform at the JUNO's. I say this so casually like I wasn't jumping up and down beating Gopi with slaps of disbelief... well sometimes I just beat him for playing a song I don't like, or if a curl is out of place ... BUT this was as,  I like to call it,  " happy beating" kinda like happy tears!

Amongst all other preparations for our 30 secs of fame,  I had a goal. To get that interview with Russell. Sushma ji was one of the first people we told of our exciting news even though it was a secret... well she's our boss so we kinda needed to not be at work  for rehearsal, in exchange I VOWED to get the interview.

On the Thursday before the show we had a rehearsal in GM place. I must say its been a big dream of mine to perform in GM place. We've performed everywhere in the city... parks, all the theaters, malls you name it but not the coveted GM place. Mariah, JT, the Canucks and now... RAAKHI.

So we get into the building, are led to the stage look into the empty stadium. We start marking out our spots and about 20 mins later I'm looking down at the stage to turn around to see gold and black patent converse shoes... Russell! Not that I'm a star struck person but I was nervous and just wanted him to REMEMBER ME! In 2002, I took a semester at McGill University and helped to MC a show with Russell called "Milan". At first he didn't remember but then he did! Thank goodness otherwise I would have looked like a big dummy to Gops and the gang.

As we are dancing I was trying to figure out how to corner him into saying yes to the interview... so about an 2 hours in we're standing back stage and it was just me and him PERFECT! I'd tried to use my "girl power" ... by that I mean smiling and being sweet ...  and asked him if i could have just 10 mins... he said "Sure sweetheart"!

That’s the story, was it a good one?

OH right... there’s more so we chatted in his dressing room outfitted with white leather couches, a big screen plasma TV and lots of food.

The guy from Much music who is on Video on Trial ... Travis? Blond? You know who I’m talking about, he was there as were many others there... so a little more nerve wracking that I would have liked it to be ... but not as bad as when I had the caffeine shakes while interviewing Deepa Metha.

The show was awesome, we were at the top of it in Russells opening... but we had a tactic. We figured that even though we were done,  we should STAY in our bhangra costumes and run around backstage to get pictures!

Why? Well if we took our costumes off people would think we were security guards and not give a crap about us!

This was a good plan as it enabled us to chat about how colourful and beatiful bhangra is with Michael Buble, Sarah Machlaughlan, Brian Adams, Nickelback and so on and so on. Check out my picts :)

      Final thoughts...

Russell Peters is a nice guy who is extremely professional and has got it together... KUDOS

Performing at GM place to a deafening crowd of 15 thousand throwing their energy back at me was a dream come true...

      Thats my STORY!

      Reflections !

      By Shushma Datt

"You will miss it when you won't have it" My mother use to say it to me.  She used to refer to anything she wanted us to do or have and we didn't. Is it true that we only appreciate something when we have lost it ?

We lived in a beautiful country for generations, When we left Kenya to go to England, i didn't for a minute think I would miss the beauty of Nairobi, the beaches of Mombasa, the mild weather, the exotic fruits, the carefree summers and the masti with friends........ I was eager to go to ENGLAND, the Queen's land, Maharani Elizabeth ka mulak.

The excitement stayed at its peak as I got a job, made friends, enjoyed travelling in the "underground tubes", was independent, and overall it is here where we knew as much as mum and dad.  They were not the "know it alls".  In fact if anything, mum was slowly and gradually left behind by all of us as we were out and about and she was now homebound.  I think she missed Nairobi the most.  She was a very independent person in Nairobi.  She was mobile, she had her own real estate business and she knew the city inside out.  She was born there.  It was London, its cold, damp climate that took everything away from her.

She would talk about the summers in Nairobi, the beach house, her friends and I heard her say "you only appreciate something, when you have lost it". She lost my father and my two brothers there.

When we were leaving England to come to Canada, I was not at all ready to leave.  I loved the busy life of London, I loved my job, I loved the excitement, I loved the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.  From a very busy city like London, I came to the sleepy town of Vancouver.  I arrived in Vancouver in the evening....On our decent to the city I could make out that it was a small compared to London, Yet it looked spacious, the mountains and the ocean gave it a unique disposition. Sure the landscape was open, big and different, but it was not Nairobi !   NOT NAIROBI ?  I missed Nairobi for the very first time in 7 years.  What was it that made me miss Nairobi ?

I realized I had time to reflect....the evergreen trees of Canada reminded me of the year around spring of Nairobi.....the coastline, though not as beautiful as Mombasa, reminded me of it.....the small hills within the city reminded me of the roads in Nairobi......and most of all,  it was the clear star filled sky in the summer nights that reminded me of the night sky in Nairobi.

Today after 28 years I am still missing a city of my birth, a country that I have not visited for 35 years.  I feel this dull pang will remain in my heart forever.  Will I ever visit my birthplace ? Maybe not.  The young memories of my city are untouched by time and the harshness of reality. I want these memories to remain young always.

  • Brokeback director in Bollywoo Brokeback director in Bollywood!

    • From: RJ1200_Crew
    • Description:

You read right! Ang Lee is currently in Bollywood hunting around for a cast for his upcoming project. After the success of Slumdog Millionaire it seems as though directors are running towards the east, trying to find their own on-screen gems.

Lee is in search for a cast for a film based on the novel Life of Pi, he is currently in Mumbai and is scheduled to stay there until May 17th. He is staying at the Taj Land’s End with an enormous entourage. Furthermore, he has visited Pondicherry, the location in which the novel takes place. It was a very fast trip and it was guarded with some of the tightest security the industry has to offer. Furthermore, Lee has set up his casting base at the Mehboob Studios and set up a meeting with the shortlisted actors the other day.

With such a talented director in the mix, the results of turing such an epic novel into a film may just turn out to be mind-blasting!

  • Bollywood Branding: What would Bollywood Branding: What would you do?

    • From: RJ1200_Crew
    • Description:

So you are one of Bollywood’s most celebrated actors and are graciously invited to speak at a press conference. When you approach the table which is set up for the press conference you realize that the water bottles placed ever so neatly are the major competitors of the brand you endorse … What do you do?

Many would simply ignore them and continue with the conference, or perhaps crack a joke or two in regards to the situation. However would you go as far as having them removed?

Aamir Khan, the star of 3 Idiots, was recently put in a situation in in which there were water bottles from a company that was a major competitor of one he endorsed. Aamir insisted that the labels be removed before he spoke. One would initially think that he is being far too finicky, however if there were millions of dollars coming out of such an endorsement would you do the same? would you even notice?

  • Bigg Boss 3: Winner Vidhu Dara Bigg Boss 3: Winner Vidhu Dara Singh!

    • From: RJ1200_Crew
    • Description:

That is right, Vidhu Dara Singh wrestled his way to the top and won Bigg Boss, the Indian version of Big Brother. The son of former wrestler and Bollywood actor Dara Singh gained a bit more fame from his win in the reality show. Vidhu has struggled to make it as an actor in Bollywood since 1994 and has finally gained a little bit of attention due to this victory.

Vidhu was known for stirring the pot and scheming in the house. He had multiple altercations with other contestants who ruffled his feathers. Mr. Singh is not a small man by any means so he must have intimidated his way to the top. The runner up was long time Bollywood actress Poonam Dhillon; she was happy with the outcome and simply stated that she was pleased to have had to opportunity to connect with younger generations.

As for the 45 year old actor, he is confident this is the boost he needed to further his career and his father Dara Singh also agrees. Interestingly enough, Dara Singh did not vote for his son … he apparently left it to the public to vote for Vidhu!

  • Highly anticipated film "My Na Highly anticipated film "My Name is Khan" just gets bigger and bigger ... in dollar value of course!

    • From: RJ1200_Crew
    • Description:

For those of you awaiting the film "My Name is Khan" and those of you jumping on the bandwagon, the deal just got sweeter for King Khan. Fox Star Studios, Hollywood's most prominent distributor, has just snatched the distribution rights to "My Name is Khan"; a highly awaited film based around the 9/11 atrocity set to release in 2010. The deal is worth Rs 100 crore ... translation $22,498,372 Canadian smakeroonies! The amount is so high that it has made the Bollywood industry record books as the highest selling amount for a film.

Shahrukh Khan's Red Chillies Films was responsible for producing this motion picture and ONLY (relative to the previous disgusting amount) budgeted a mere Rs 38 crore. All we have to say is job well done SRK on a profitable (for the lack of a better word :S) deal.

If this new hasn't caught your attention perhaps the plot will. "My Name is Khan" is set in a post 9/11 America, and is central to the discrimination faced by many Muslims during that time. The story is told through the life of the main character Rizwan Khan who is played by none other than Shahrukh Khan. Although this film may seem reminiscent of the recent blockbuster “New York”, it promises to bring a unique twist as the main character suffers from a form of Autism known as Asperger’s Syndrome. For those of you who yearn for a typical Bollywood love story the director does not disappoint as “Rizwan” falls in love with “Mandira” (Kajol) in the film. Seeing Shahrukh and Kajol playing opposite one another is always a treat and has resulted in unforgettable smash hits.

Do you think the film will and can live up to the high expectations of Fox Star Studios?

  • An album 2 years in the making An album 2 years in the making!

    • From: flite
    • Description:

In the summer of 2007 we found a new song called Ni Nachle from a singer from Holland (of all places), called Imran Khan.  The song blew up on our charts and I believe it was in the top 10 songs of 2007.

Ever since then, we've been told that Imran khan's Debut album was just around the corner.  Every couple of weeks would check if it had dropped yet or not.  After while we checked every couple of months.  The last time I checked was about 6 months ago.  I just happened to look the guy up because someone had asked about the song.

I'm happy to say that his album Unforgettable has finally come out and you can get it on iTunes.  I'm not sure where in the city you'll be able to get it, but it's up on iTunes for sure.  Having listened to it just briefly, I'd have to say it's not bad.  Considering it's been 2 years, you'd think there would be more to the album, but it's not too bad.  If there is a favourite song on the album that you like, let us know.
